Women from a miner's family usually looked after the house and home. In addition to this, they often had to carry out other gainful activities such as the boiling of fruits and vegetables from their own garden. As part of the gender-based distribution of labour, the women from the late 1920s were offered support with cooking, nutrition and housekeeping courses from the "factory welfare organisation".
