Fredrik I, King of Sweden

Georg Engelhard Schröder1724/1740

The Royal Armoury, Sweden

The Royal Armoury, Sweden
Stockholm, Sweden

This is a state portrait showing the King in full-length. On his head a white whig with long ringlets. He is dressed in a light blue costume embroidered with white decorations. The royal mantle in purple has an ermine cape over the shoulders, his right hand rests on the hip while pointing with his left hand to the regalia (not the Swedish ones); the orb, sceptre and crown laying on a red velvet cushion on a heavily ornamented table. Among these ornaments the Swedish and the Hesse coats of arms. Behind him the silver throne of Queen Christina can be distinguished. It´s not possible to date the painting more exactly than from the period after Schröder's return in 1724 and up to the 1740s, when his style became more and more outdated. More of comparable studies of the motive is needed. It is not signed.

  • Description: The Painter Georg Engelhard Schröder's father Veit Engelhard, had arrived from Nürnberg in around 1670 to Stockholm where Engelhard was born in 1684. At a very young age he became a pupil of the artist David von Krafft (1655-1724). In 1703 he left Sweden for studies abroad. Having lived for periods in Germany, Italy, France and England he returned 21 years later to Sweden with impressions of Italian painters as Rosalba Carreira, Carlo Dolci, Carlo Maratta, but also of the French Noël Nicolas Coypel and the Englishman Godfrey Kneller. Back in Sweden he succeeded Daniel von Krafft as court portrait painter in December 1724. Fredrik I had him make innumerable portraits of himself and the Queen Ulrika Eleonora. He was also employed by many noble families. In the 1740s he was driven out of competition by the painter Gustaf Lundberg with his new French style. Far from being the most skilled Georg Engelhard was anyhow very much appreciated in his time. He painted different kind of motives, church paintings, allegorical and historical motives as well as portraits.
