Before miners were able to protect themselves underground using leather helmets, they had to use simple caps made of white cloth. This was later followed by the so-called "Fahroder Schachthut", which was made of solid felt. This French miner's helmet is a well maintained example of a French leather helmet introduced in the 1920s.
