About the series: Goodbye Padmini: Mumbai’s ubiquitous black and yellow taxi is an iconic image of the city. The ‘Premiere Padmini’ was originally manufactured in India between 1964 and 2000 by the Italian company, Fiat. The charm of the Padmini taxi is unique for its disco-lights, over the top interiors and taxi art, flowers, incense sticks, colourful seat covers, and icons of various Hindu Gods, or Bollywood stars (or both, side by side). In 2008, the court ordered the “phasing out” of taxis older than 25 years. Several thousands of Padmini taxis have been destroyed ever since. Today this inextricable part of the Mumbai experience is quickly diminishing.
About the Photographer: Aparna Jayakumar, b. 1984, India, is based in Mumbai. Her work has been featured in Inge Morath Magazine, CNN Traveller, Verve, and The Sunday Guardian among others, and has also been exhibited in Paris, New York, Rome, Budapest, Bratislava, New Delhi and Mumbai. She was nominated for the photography award Prix Pictet in 2009 and has shot advertising campaigns for brands such as GEOX, Cadbury's, Etisalat Mobile and publicity stills for Indian films with directors including Sooni Taraporevala and Vishal Bhardwaj.
