Sarcophagus front

Bonino da CampioneSecond half of the 14th century

Sforzesco Castle

Sforzesco Castle
Milan, Italy

This sargophagus front is an excellent example of sculpture from
the Campione area. It
was made by a follower of Bonino da Campione, a prolific artist who greatly
influenced sculptors working in the Lombard town of Campione in the second half
of the fourteenth century. His
merit was to disseminate - with several variations - a style where traditional
local elements, evident in the solid construction of the figures, blended with
the elegant refinements imported into Milan by Tuscan sculptors.
