This image is from a collection created by Mr WA Walburn of ‘Heavytree’ Exeter. The lecture comprises photographs of book plates, historic maps and other illustrations, and tells the history of the city of Exeter. This photograph shows men and women standing on the River Exe which has frozen over in cold weather. The freezing of the River Exe was a memorable occasion in the city, and perhaps provided some small distraction from the horrors of the First World War.
