  • Title: FW De Klerk
  • Story: 2004 This photo of President Mandela and me was taken in the Parliament of South Africa on a special occasion – the celebration on 10 May 2004 of the tenth anniversary of South Africa’s new democratic constitutional dispensation. It was a very special moment, reflecting also the friendship which had developed between two former opponents. To me it carries a powerful message of reconciliation. In my speech on that occasion, I reminded Parliament of the historic agreements that opened the way to the New South Africa, that averted a catastrophe and that created a new South Africa, offering hope and justice to all its people.  I urged all South Africans to join hands to tackle economic and social transformation – just as we had joined hands years earlier to tackle the constitutional transformation of our country. I called on them to meet the challenge of bringing real justice and equity to all our people and to make our wonderful country a shining example to the rest of the world.
