When Beethoven was still new in Vienna, Prince von Lichnowsky proved to be his most important patron - not only with money, but also by introducing him to the Viennese nobility. Lichnowksy in turn benefited from Beethoven's extravagant reputation.However, when Beethoven refused to play in front of French officers, the break came. Beethoven confidently wrote: "There are and will be thousands of princes; Beethoven has only one."
