Galot refers to the traditional clothes worn by the people of Jeju for their work and daily activities. Galot are distinct for their brown color and leathery texture, both of which come from dying the garments with a special extract made from the juice of unripe persimmons, which are native to the island. The steps of dying and drying must be repeated several times, resulting in clothes that are very durable, and will not deteriorate or smell bad from sweat. Galot also provide good ventilation, and they will not cling to the body even when wet. Overall, the superior durability and comfort of galot are ideal for the types of outdoor work that are indigenous to an agricultural life in a sub-tropical island climate.
