This ‘game book’ was possibly made as a love token. Using a series of flaps, dif ferent types of creature could be made using the body parts of mythical beasts and real animals. Shown here is a mermaid, who can be given legs to become a woman or a man’s head to become a fish-man. An accompanying poem describes how the mermaid lured sailors, ‘Who leaving off their ship were found, On shore, by my enchantments drown’d.’
