The game of Jack Straws was derived, or possibly inspired, the game called Pick-up Sticks. Usually, Jack Straws differ in that they are shaped like tools such as a hoe, a ladder, and other farm tools. Pick-up Sticks tend to be simple straight sticks. Both games involve removing sticks from the randomly-thrown pile without disturbing others. A battery-operated variant from the 1950s utilized tweezers, connected by wire, to make a light flash and a buzzer sound if the player touched the sides of the top of the straws' container, while removing one. As such, this game prefigured the later game Operation, which works in a similar manner.
