Charles S. Roberts founded the Avalon Hill Game Company (formerly the Avalon Game Company) in 1954 with the publication of his first strategy battle game, Tactics. Through Roberts' influence and under several subsequent owners, Avalon Hill pioneered many concepts popular in modern wargaming. It became one of the most recognizable publishers of these games during the latter half of the 20th century. Today Avalon Hill is a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast, itself a subsidiary of Hasbro.
