Female geladas tend to be closely related and have strong social ties and stay in their band all their lives. A band of gelada is made up of around 200 members, who share a common foraging and sleeping area. Different bands sometimes mix in order to share common grazing areas, forming large gelada ‘communities’ or herds. Around 4500 geladas live in the park and the surrounding Simien massif.
