The purist silhouette that Balenciaga pursued in the 60s was a line he could implement especially well with silk gazar, developed by Swiss textile firm Abraham. This rigid silk fabric required a minimalist cut that lends architectural clarity and sculptural quality to this yellow evening gown. A short strapless continuously worked gown is worn beneath the over-dress, knee-length in front and extending into a train at the back. The over-dress closes with a large bow at the Empire line. Inspired by the clothes of the Spanish flamenco dancers, Balenciaga first began implementing the waning hemline in the 50s. The purist wedding dress that he designed for Maité Kutz in 1967 belongs among the Spaniard’s most famous gazar models.
