On December 19, 1948, the Dutch deployed a second military offensive by attacking Yogyakarta, the then-capital of Indonesia. The Indonesian govemment appointed Syafruddin Prawiranegara to establish an interim govemment in Bukittinggi to temporarily take over the Central Govemment. At the same time, General Sudirman personally led the guerilla troops, in spite of health problems. After the reinstatement of Yogyakarta as the capital of Indonesia in July 1949, General Sudirman returned to Yogyakarta.
