George Washington's Cherry Tree Quilt

This incredibly detailed, well-preserved quilt is entirely hand-sewn, with quilting stitches averaging eleven per inch. Pencil lines are still visible on the quilt front, marking the various motifs. A variety of needlework techniques are featured including what we now refer to as "trapunto" - raised areas created by quilted stitches which are stuffed from theback. Applique is used in various ways including both underlaid (reverse) and overlaid in the centers of the flowers and buds around the perimeter. Green wool yarn has been used to embroider details.
