Museum of Natural History of Venice
Venice, Italy

Widespread mainly in the steppe and desert areas of the Old World, jerboas belong to a family of rodents that includes numerous jumping mice and rats. As their name suggests, these small mammals are especially adapted to move by means of leaps. Like other hopping mammals, jerboas have exceptionally elongated hind legs, particularly in the carpal portion. The tail is also very developed, to fulfill the function of counterweight while jumping.
