Inspired by European Cubist artists Pablo Picasso and Juan Gris, Suzy Frelinghuysen painted in a style using geometric abstraction. In Glass and Bottle, Frelinghuysen simplified the objects, table, and background into geometric shapes. She was also known for her work in collage, often incorporating mixed media materials into her paintings, as seen here.

From a young age, Frelinghuysen showed great interest in art and music, but received no formal training in either. She moved to New York at age 18 to become an opera singer, but after meeting and marrying the artist George L. K. Morris, she began to explore abstract painting. While Frelinghuysen showed her art throughout the 1930s and 1940s, opera remained her true passion. She eventually enjoyed great success as a singer with the New York City Opera in the late 1940s.
