Gold and turquoise ear ornament with a net design ML100852

This is a pair of ear ornaments of gold and turquoise. The designs on the discs of this pair of ear ornaments feature a net design. Nets were represented since very early in Andean art, since subsistence activities such as fishing and hunting included them. The symbolism of ropes and nets is related to the crossing of the threshold between the world of the living and the world of the ancestors. The ear ornaments were one of the most important ornaments of the Andean elites. When the Spanish arrived, they called the Inca nobles “orejones” (big-ears), impressed by the size of his ears, enlarged by the ornaments they wore. Some of these ear ornaments were too heavy and large to hold them in place, so they were attached to bands that were fastened to the head. In Moche ear ornaments the magnificent work of mosaic with gems like chrysocolla, sodalite and turquoise, and the use of pearl and shell Spondylus sp. can be noted. Este es un par de orejeras de oro y turquesa con diseño de red. La red ha sido desde muy temprano un símbolo de umbral o de tránsito entre los mundos, y como tal aparece representada en escenas de captura de ofrendas sacrificiales. Las orejeras han sido uno de los ornamentos más significativos para distinguir a los personajes con poder en los Andes. Cuando llegaron los españoles, llamaron orejones a los nobles incas, impresionados por el tamaño de sus orejas, agrandadas por los adornos que llevaban. Algunas de estas orejeras eran tan pesadas y grandes que para mantenerlas en su lugar, se sujetaban con bandas que iban amarradas a la cabeza. En las orejeras Mochica se puede observar el magnífico trabajo de mosaicos con gemas como la crisocola, la sodalita y la turquesa, así como el uso de nácar y concha de Spondylus sp. La diversidad de materiales en estos ornamentos exclusivos de prestigio, da cuenta clara de la participación de las élites en redes de intercambio de larga distancia. (UH)
