Goliathus cacicus, Chief Goliath Beetle

The Chief Goliath Beetle is a large species belonging to the scarab family. Goliath beetles can grow to about 100mm in length; this specimen is 92mm long. There is sexual dichromatism in this species, which means males and females are differently coloured. The males are normally iridescent, while the females aren't. The actually patterning you can see on the beetle is similar between males and females. The effect is achieved through tubular scales in the elytra of the insect that contain random structures which reflect light differently.
