The greatest threat to gorillas is humans. Logging and expanding agriculture have led to the loss of much of the forest gorillas inhabit. Poaching to make gorilla products, capturing the apes as pets, and killing for meat have reduced their numbers further: even in the safety of national parks. These kind and intelligent animals pound on their chests to protect their families when they are in danger; ironically, this loud action helps illegal hunters to find their targets.
