Gosho doll originated in Kyoto around the 18th century. During that time the Emperor of Japan bestowed the dolls on the western feudal lords, when they visited the Kyoto Imperial Palace on their way traveling between Edo (Tokyo) and their domains due to Sankinkotai (alternate-year residence in Edo). Gosho doll represents the chubby and lovely young child figure. The body made of wood or Toso clay is coated heavily with whitewash, creating the white glossy skin.
