Graffitied Penny Coin

Royal Mintc. 1797-1824

Bank of England Museum

Bank of England Museum
London, United Kingdom

A smoothed down penny coin known as a 'cartwheel' penny because of its large size. The front still features an outline of George III with text around the edge. The original back of the coin can barely be seen, and has been engraved over with graffiti relating to Henry Fauntleroy, an English banker and forger who was hung for counterfeiting crimes in 1824.
