Grave relief with ancestor portraits
50-1 BC.
Height: 10 cm. Width: 34 cm.
Marble.
Grave relief of marble, stating the names of two freed slaves: A. Aemilius Aristomachus and Aemilia Hilana. The relief shows ancestor portraits placed in cupboards, which was common among wealthy Romans. Inasmuch as the inscriptions names freed slaves, it seems unlikely that the family could actually have owned such portraits.
