Paul Dougherty was a Brooklyn-born painter.
The son of a lawyer, Dougherty grew up expecting to follow his father’s footsteps. After studying law and being admitted to the New York Bar, he decided to pursue painting.
Dougherty’s artistic training largely occurred in Europe.
During the 1910s, Dougherty traveled extensively and received favorable reviews of his work. His style changed throughout his career and he experimented with oils, pastels, and watercolors with subjects ranging from landscapes and seascapes to a still life.
