The Index Project
Copenhagen, Denmark

Normally we think of a piece of furniture as something which has been designed in advance and for one purpose only – bookshelves for storage, a sofa to sit in. But what if we – in the dialogue between the subject and the object, between the user and the room – could make criteria of the way in which rooms should look? Rooms, whose purpose has not been defined in advance?

GRID is a cube of 40 x 40 x 40 cm built from 12 mm pressure-molded plastic. It is supplied with holes for assembling the cubes to one another and holds an unseen flexibility in the way we decorate our homes and work places. It is not bookshelves, a chair, a room divider or a piece of furniture in the traditional sense of the word. It is rather a structure, which can be used for building and creating new rooms and decorations in several dimensions. A sort of decoration parallel to the LEGO brick. A construction kit whose form and use is not given in advance.

GRID is closely linked to the wish of creating freedom and choices for the users, and the system stands on the shoulders of many, many years of building systems for storage, of user contact and discussions, of input from artists and designers.
