Salzburg, 1428 – 1430
Parchment, illuminated by several artists (among them the so called Jeremias master)
The large-format Latin Grillinger Bible, comprising the Old and the New Testament in Latin, is the masterpiece of a Salzburg studio in which several artists worked. The illuminations were inspired by from very diverse sources: the image program of French Bibles, Bohemian illumination under King Wenceslaus, the Vienna court workshop, as well as contemporary panel painting. The combination of tradition and innovation allowed the creation of unique works of art, which in turn served as models for later Bible illustrations, for example for a number of illuminations of the Ottheinrich Bible.
Fol. 3r: The dedication image shows the Petrus Grillinger who commissioned the monumental Bible, Petrus Grillinger, kneeling before the oversized, halo-bearing Saint Rupert, the patron of the Archbishopric of Salzburg, sitting on his throne.
