The grinding of axes and other stone tools was a technological innovation of the Neolithic period. The flintstone was knapped into a roughout while still at the quarry site and traded in this form. Such a roughout got its final form from being ground on a stone surface, using sand and water. Through this new technique, a blunted edge could be resharpened with minimal loss of material, because it did not have to be reworked completely.
