Astronauts must be able to work with and pick up objects while wearing spacesuit gloves. Gloves for extravehicular activities are made to protect astronauts from the space environment: the fingers are the part of the body that gets coldest in space. The gloves for Orlan spacesuit were used on the Soviet space station MIR on May 22 1997 during the Soyuz TM-25 mission.
