The portrait of Guru Nanak has inscribed all over except his feet Sikhs' most sacred hymn - Japuji Sahib, Sikhism, a sect not approving idolatry, had portraits of Gurus earlier too, but it was during the Company period and thereafter that they were rendered on a massive scale. Besides the monochromatic background - a usual feature of the 19th century European portraits, the halo radiating around his face is similar to one seen around the face of Christ in his 19th century portraits.
