The King Gustav III is depicted in his gilded armour. On his breast the Order of Seraphim is attached and across his breast the band of this order. The skirt is dotted with crowns, on his legs high top-boots. In his sword-belt is the sword hanging that the King carried at his coronation ceremony in 1772. The horse's headstall is decorated with plumes and precious stones. The caparison is dotted with crowns and is trimmed with ermine and tassels. A bow is tied around the tail of the horse.
In the background there is a landscape in rough outline with trees, clouds and the barrier of an arena of jousting. On a label glued to the top following words are written: "Gustave Trois au Tournoi Donné à Ekolsund de 29 aout 1776".
To this painting belongs also a framed letter of challenge from the same occasion.
