댕기는 머리를 묶거나 장식하는 다양한 형태의 헝겊 끈인데 이 댕기는 석웅황 댕기이다. 석웅황은 광택이 나는 돌의 일종으로 염료(染料)나 채료(彩料) 등으로도 사용된다. 조선시대에는 부녀자나 어린이들이 석웅황을 몸에 지니면 뱀에게도 물리지 않는다 하여 애용했다.
