Hamburg and Archaeology: Flint Tools

To the east of Ahrensburg, the meltwater of the last receding glaciers formed a glacial groove in the ground beneath the ice, a so-called tunnel valley. After the Ice Age, reindeer herds migrated through here. They were hunted by groups of people who had pitched their temporary campsites here. Their tools, made of flint, were so distinctive that the complete Northern German culture of this late Palaeolithic Period, 13 000 years ago, was designated as Ahrensburg Culture.
