One of the largest cemeteries in Hamburg lies near Fuhlsbüttel. The urnfield was discovered in 1873 during foundation works for the prison “Santa Fu”. In the course of the Alster regulation, large scale excavations took place in 1914. Up to 5 000 urns may have been situated on this site, of which only 500 were recovered. Many burials were furnished with grave goods, e.g. tools of trade, costume accessories and jewelry, which were typical for Germanic women.
