In 1963, Disney released “The Sword in the Stone” in theaters. Based on T.H. White’s 1938 novel of the same name, the film portrayed the legendary story of orphan Arthur (Wart) and his gift to pull a sword from an anvil with an inscription proclaiming that whoever pulled the sword out would become the rightful King of England. Disney, a fan of the Arthurian legend, found the book’s philosophies, vivid descriptions of characters, the sorcery, and the boy hero perfect for the big screen (though he did tone down the philosophical nature of the book).
