  • More Information: Hållars Matthias Hansson combined colour and form in a personal way. He often used dark tones, and etched tulip halves were typical of him. Rhomboids were particularly characteristic of rustic furniture from Lima in Dalarna. Hållars Matthias was also known as a fiddler. As agriculture was not enough to live on in Dalarna, a resident of the region might need to be a farmer, carpenter, joiner, painter, and perhaps also musician and schoolteacher. In the 1800s, however, farmers in Lima grew rich by selling timber to Norway and then to timber magnate Dickson in Gothenburg. They spent a lot of money on decoration and furniture, such as the cabinet in the picture. But by the late 1860s, the glory days were over. The forest was devastated and the money was gone. Lima was one of the parishes that experienced the highest levels of emigration to America. The cabinet sat on the wall above the bench secured to the wall at the long table in the cottage. Inside there is a shelf for utensils and a spoon rack, where the household's spoons hung in a row.
