Hard hats quickly became a standard and iconic piece of mill wear in the 20th Century, and were vital from a safety perspective. In heavily vertical mill environments, where catwalks can extend hundreds of feet in the air, any objects that fall from above can be lethal without a hard hat even if they only drop a short distance.
