In late April and early May 1886, thousands of workers joined together hoping to make Chicago home to the eight-hour work day. These protests turned violent on May 3 when police gunfire killed two strikers. Violence escalated on May 4 when a bomb blast and gunfire at Chicago's Haymarket killed police officers and protesters. Local authorities put eight anarchists on trial for the bombing. This trial ended in four executions. Labor union activists and others buried those executed and others connected with the Haymarket Affair here.
