Head of a Bishop

Domenico Brusasorzi (Verona 1516 - 1567)1550 - 1570

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

This portrait of a man with vivacious gaze wearing bishop’s vestments is probably a fragment from a larger altar piece, a recent gift from a private collector. Domenico was one of the most celebrated painters of the 16th century in Verona, active in every genre from landscape to portraiture. According to historical sources he used to portray friends and personages of his time in his figures of saints, which explains the obvious portrait quality of these heads.
