Washington, DC, United States

This helmet is part of the SPD-143 spacesuit designed by ILC Company to be used as an additional training suit fleet for the Apollo program. Twenty SPD-143 suits were made in its duration of training usage. The SPD-143 suits were used for early evaluations of the Lunar Excursion Module (later changed to Lunar Module) and the Command Module. The helmet lacked an eye protection sun visor as compared to its predecessor, the AX1-L.The designation SPD-143-1A with the serial number 016 indicates that this helmet was made for the 16th suit made under the Apollo contract.NASA transferred this helmet along with other components made during the contract period to the museum after the end of the Apollo program.
