This is one of the statues from the Coventry Cross that was finished in 1544. The cross replaced an earlier one and was nearly 14 metres tall. From at least 1300 a Coventry Cross was located in the centre of the marketplace, where Cross Cheaping met Broadgate. There have been at least four Coventry Crosses over the centuries! This statue is of Henry VI. After his death a cult grew up around him which was popular in Coventry. The city had supported the House of Lancaster in the Wars of the Roses and Henry's Queen Margaret moved court to Coventry in 1456.
