This painting is the pendant of 'The gust', which depicts a ship in a raging storm. In both works the vessel is rendered in detail, reflecting the artist's considerable knowledge and expertise. The portrayal of the sea and the sky is less finished. Willem van de Velde II specialized in marine painting, like his father Willem van de Velde I, and the two worked closely together.

From the collection of Sir P. Stephens and Lord Rianelogh (London). A. van der Hoop Bequest, 1854. On loan from the City of Amsterdam, 1885.
