Although its author, Jesuit priest François Du Creux (1596-1666), had never visited Canada, Historiæ Canadensis, published in France in 1664, is a key record of this country's early history. Du Creux based his scholarly work on nearly 20 years research, from texts contained in the Jesuit Relations, conversations with his missionary colleagues (including fathers Lallemand, Jogues and Lejeune), and written accounts of Samuel de Champlain and Marc Lescarbot, author of Histoire de la Nouvelle-France.
