This is a vertical flute owned by Tachibana Muneshige. It was created by Hara Zensai who was active in the 17th century as a master of making hitoyogiri flutes.
The flutes were made with the middle part of the bamboo trunk, and have four finger holes on the front and one on the back. They have only one bamboo joint on the body, which is the origin of its name, “Hito-yo-giri (一節切) ” —literally meaning“one- node-cut.”
In the Warring States period, many samurai commanders liked to practice playing the hitoyogiri. However, it gradually fell out of favor after the creation of shakuhachi flutes, which have a wider sound and range of expression.
