Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist

Neapolitan schoolc. 1600

Museo de Huesca

Museo de Huesca
Huesca, Spain

This 17th-century oil on canvas from the Neapolitan school shows the Virgin Mary sitting in the foreground with the Infant Jesus on her lap, asleep on her breast. Beside her, in the background, the Infant Saint John the Baptist has his right index finger raised to his lips, appealing for silence. With his left hand, he strokes the raised head of a lamb, which symbolizes the Agnus Dei (Lamb of God). Above him, Saint Joseph sleeps on his staff. The color and light emanating from the central figures contrast with the darkness of the rest of the composition.
