Honor to unfortunate courage

François GEORGIN and PELLERIN19th century

Musée Bertrand
Châteauroux, France

This plate is a perfect example of the spirit of propaganda that permeates Pellerin's work. Many prints, like this one, serve to propagate the patriotic imperial cult by showing a Bonaparte equal to a saint, generous, benevolent and just.
After the victory at Arcole, Bonaparte broke away from the rest of the army chiefs, including Murat and the Duke of Castiglione, and took off his hat to greet the defeated Austrian prisoners.
