Horse Requisition Tablet

Joseon Dynasty

National Palace Museum of Korea

National Palace Museum of Korea
Seoul, South Korea

Horse requisition tablets were first manufactured to restrict the use of horses in Goryeo Dynasty when the post-station system was implemented. This practice was handed down to Joseon Dynasty, and in 1435, the 17th year of King Sejong’s reign, new horse requisition tablets were issued to the Royal family, provincial governors, and army commanders. Number of granted horses engraved on the tablets varied according to their ranks, and public officials received horses by showing their horse requisition tablets. One side of the round brass tablet displays engraved horses, and the other side reads “Official Seal of Personnel Authority (尙瑞院印)” with the date of production.
