This map of China was a supplement to Purchas His Pilgrimes, published in England in 1625. Its original source was supposedly the Guangyu tu quanshu (Complete Book of Maps of Extended Territory) drawn by Luo Hongxian (1504-1564) in 1541. The blank squares on the map were originally Chinese characters. The vignettes in the corners depict Matteo Ricci and a Chinese couple. Lines of latitude and longitude were also added later to the map, which exerted a significant impact on European understanding of China in the early 17th century due to its wide circulation.
