Fuechsell climbed a hill just north of downtown Ossining to create this delicate study of light and atmosphere that is also an accurate historical document. The Ossining Historical Society identified the landmarks in the painting: at left: the spires of the First Presbyterian Church, dedicated in 1870 and the First Baptist Church, completed in June 1874. At the center of the picture is St. Paul's Episcopal Church, built in the 1830s, although the spire was not erected until sometime between 1870 and 1873. The building with the mansard roof to the left of St. Paul's is probably the Olive Opera House, which burned down in 1874.
