This is the original poster upon which Waiting was based. It is from a series of approximately 350 motivational posters published in the 1920s by Mather & Company, a Chicago printing firm. The company's parent, the Seth Seiders Syndicate, was interested in producing posters that focused on workers' interpersonal relationships. The 1920s ushered in a managerial interest in the emotional aspects in the workplace after World War I, when posters were created to promote working for a greater good (the war effort). "The [Mather] posters preached self-discipline, loyalty, honesty, and diligence, and promised that workers who followed these guidelines would be promoted above their peers." (Slate, "The Colorful Posters That Motivated Jazz-Age Workers To Strive")
